Polemonium reptans
Jacob's Ladder
Loosely clustered light blue, bell-shaped, 5-petaled flowers bloom in mid to late spring above a mound of textured green leaves.
Description:
Jacob’s Ladder features loosely clustered light blue, bell-shaped, 5-petaled flowers that bloom profusely for a few short weeks in mid to late spring. Attractive, finely divided leaves offer a mound of lush vegetative texture, even after the flowers cease blooming. Makes a lovely groundcover. Grows best in partial shade and tolerates sun, as long as the soil remains moist. It has little drought tolerance, and may go dormant if soil lacks sufficient moisture. Prefers loamy, humus-rich soil. Tolerates sandy soil and a range of soil pH, from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. Ideal planting conditions will result in numerous seedlings. Native habitat includes rich deciduous woodlands, stream and river banks, wooded slopes and woodland edges. Add to your woodland garden, or shady spots in your yard. Pair Polemonium reptans with Eastern Columbine, (Aquilegia Canadensis), Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginicum), Foam Flower (Tiarella cordifolia), Coral Bells (Heuchera Americana), Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), and Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium)
Wildlife Value: Visited by native bees, honeybees, butterflies and moths.
