Magnolia x soulangiana

Saucer Magnolia is a small to medium, deciduous hybrid tree (M. denudata x M. liliiflora). Its fragrant, pink-white-purplish flowers bloom in March, offering early spring color to your garden. Plant it in a protected area of your yard, as it does not handle frost well — the flowers may become brown and mushy. It can also be planted as a multi-stemmed shrub. You can use Saucer Magnolia as a specimen tree or wild hedge for your yard or neighborhood park.

Lonicera sempervirens

Trumpet Honeysuckle is a twining, wildlife-friendly deciduous vine, which will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to your garden! Its red-pink-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom May-June and offer hummingbirds and nectar-loving pollinators an energy-rich food source. The berries are an attractive food source for many species of birds, including finches and robins. The foliage is host to butterfly and moth larvae (caterpillars), including Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon) and Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis). Wait until after flowering to prune. Trumpet Honeysuckle can be trained on your trellis, arbor, pergola, or along a fence around your yard.

Liatris scariosa

Eastern Blazing Star is a tall, upright perennial. Rose, lavender, or white feathery flowers open from top to bottom from August-October, and make excellent cut or dried flowers. Eastern Blazing Star is a valuable nectar plant for native bees and bumblebees. It does well in dry soils or rocky soils. Use it in borders, meadows, and naturalized areas, and as vertical accent plants.

Leiophyllum buxifolium

Sandmyrtle is a small evergreen shrub with dense, smooth, leathery-textured foliage. Rosy buds open to white flowers tipped with pink, May-June. This shrub prefers moist, sandy soil, and does not tolerate drought. Use it in woodland gardens and for naturalizing.

Lathyrus japonicus

Beach Pea is a sprawling, perennial vine native to beach and dune environments; its roots help stabilize sand. Clusters of bright pink to lavender, pea-shaped flowers bloom June-August. This plant produces long, smooth, flat seed pods in the fall. Good choice for seaside gardens. Beach Pea may be difficult to find commercially. Tell your local garden or nursery about your interest in this plant.

Kalmia latifolia

Mountain Laurel is a broadleaf evergreen shrub. Cup-shaped, white to pink flowers with darker pink to purple markings cover the shrub in late spring. It is a host plant for larvae (caterpillars) of the Laurel sphinx moth (Sphinx kalmiae). Use in groups in shrub borders, shade gardens, or woodland areas; mixes well with Rhododendrons and Azaleas.

Kalmia angustifolia

Sheep Laurel is a flowering evergreen shrub with leathery, blue-green leaves. Clusters of small, rose-pink, saucer-shaped flowers bloom in late June. This shrub prefers a moist, acidic, organic soil, but will also grow in dry, sandy soil. Use it in a shrub border or woodland garden. Plant parts are toxic if ingested.

Hibiscus moscheutos

Rose Mallow is a shrub-like perennial with large, heart-shaped leaves, which are smooth on top and “hairy” underneath. Its large, showy, red, pink, white, or bicolor flowers bloom non-stop from midsummer to frost. This plant prefers moist, organic soil. Use it as a specimen plant or plant in masses. Good choice for low, wet sites and edges of ponds or water features.

Gomphrena globosa

Common Globe Amaranth is a compact, heat-tolerant annual. Its clover-like flower heads in shades of purple, red, pink, and white bloom on sturdy, thick stems from June to frost. Globe Amaranth makes an excellent fresh-cut or dried flower. Use it in beds, borders, rock gardens, or containers.

Geranium maculatum

Spotted Geranium is a native perennial geranium with deeply lobed, palm-shaped leaves. Loose clusters of showy pink to lilac flowers bloom April-May. Its other common name, Crane’s Bill, comes from the beak-like shape of the seed structure, which catapults seeds when dried. Use it in shady borders, open woodland gardens, or wildflower gardens. It can be massed to create an attractive groundcover.
