Campsis radicans
Trumpet Creeper
Large clusters of orange-red tubular-shaped flowers bloom June-August, offering stunning color all summer long.
Description:
Deciduous clinging woody vine. Large clusters of orange-red tubular-shaped flowers bloom June-August, offering stunning color all summer long. Bean-like pods split open when ripe, releasing wind dispersed seeds; also spreads through rhizomes. Tolerates heat, humidity, sandy soil and drought. Needs plenty of room and a sturdy structure on which to grow. Plant in wildlife gardens, naturalized areas, or along fence rows. Annual pruning will be necessary to control spread, or train it around a pole or trellis away from other structures.
Wildlife Value: Ruby-throated hummingbirds and long-tongued bees benefit from its nectar. Larval host to Trumpet Vine Sphinx Moth (Paratraea plebeja).
