Eutrochium maculatum
Spotted Joe-Pye
Tall, sturdy purple-colored stalks are tipped with large clusters of purple-pink flowers that bloom July-September.
Description:
Tall, sturdy purple-colored stalks are tipped with large clusters of purple-pink flowers that bloom July-September. The fruit is a dry plume carrying a seed that disperses by wind, allowing Spotted Joe-Pye to self-spread. Leaves encircle the stem from top to bottom. Spotted Joe-Pye prefers full sun and moist, organic-rich soil that does not dry out. Native to wetland habitats, Spotted Joe-Pye is tolerant of flooding. This tall plant can be used in the back of borders, in wet meadows, along stream banks, and low areas with pooling water or a high water table. Trim in spring for shorter, bushier plants.
Wildlife Value: Showy flowers are attractive to many different species of bees and numerous butterflies including swallowtails and skippers. It is a larval host to several species of moths. Birds feed on the seeds.
