Description:

Sweet Everlasting is an easy-to-grow annual that requires little to no maintenance. Some plants are biennial and overwinter as a small basal rosette of leaves. Others complete their life cycle in one season. Tiny hairs covering the leaves create attractive silvery green foliage. Rabbit Tobacco prefers full sun and tolerates dry soil. It has high drought tolerance. Cream colored flowers are clustered at the tops of the stems, and bloom July through September. Tubular flowers appear like closed, yellow-tipped buds, surrounded by numerous scale-like bracts that spread out and detach once the seeds mature. A tuft of wispy fluff is attached to the seeds which carries them off to nearby soils to germinate the following year. Seeds can be collected and broadcast in areas you wish them to grow. The plant exudes a subtle maple syrup fragrance. Sweet Everlasting will make a nice addition to your native mesic garden. Allow the plant to remain standing throughout the winter to offer cover and seeds for birds. Sweet Everlasting is similar to Pearly Everlasting, however, Peraly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) has button-shaped flowers that open more widely.

Wildlife Value: Flowers are visited by short-tongued bees, wasps, flies and other beneficial insects. Ants may form a symbiotic relationship with the plant, exchanging nectar for protection. Birds may eat the seeds.
