Rubus odoratus
Purple Flowering Raspberry
Maple-leaf-shaped foliage surround purple, fragrant, rose-like flowers that bloom profusely all summer long.
Description:
Purple Flowering Raspberry is a deciduous suckering shrub with cane-like stems and an aggressive, suckering habit. Maple-leaf-shaped foliage surround purple, fragrant, rose-like flowers that bloom profusely all summer long. Stems are hairy and there are few, if any, thorns. Flowers give way to edible red raspberries which lack the sweet juiciness of its brambling cousins. Purple Flowering Raspberry prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It tolerates a wide range of soil, sun and moisture conditions and has good shade tolerance. Due to its suckering nature, its best to plant Purple Flowering Raspberry in an area where it can run, including large borders, woodland edges, wild native plant gardens, or naturalized areas.
Wildlife Value: The fragrant colorful blooms attract a variety of pollinators. Birds readily eat the berries. The thick foliage provides shelter for widlife.
